March 27, 2007
Concord

With multiple laurels under their belts – including two Grammy awards, a Latin Grammy (and multiple nominations), two Billboard Latin awards and an Alma award, countless film, TV, commercial and game placements, and national tours with the likes of Santana, the Dave Matthews Band, Los Lonely Boys, Lenny Kravitz and many others – Ozomatli ventured into new terrain: a community art space in the heart of their hometown.

“We did an art installation at Tropico de Nopal, a gallery near Macarthur Park in L.A.,” recalls bassist-vocalist Wil-Dog Abers. “We stayed there for two weeks, writing; each member had a corner of the room, which we decorated ourselves. Visitors came in and each of us got a chance to show how we create music, individually and collectively. That environment gave birth to these songs. I think we created our most cohesive album yet.” Percussionist Jiro Yamaguchi adds, “There were no rules or definitions. We were in the midst of forming the seeds of these songs. I was pretty confused at first, and other people felt that way as well, but it came out really cool.”

“Dragon” reflects the creativity of the art installation, and carried into the studio with producer KC Porter. Ozo rocks the dance floor with jams like “Here We Go” and “Creo,” as well as the funk of “Magnolia Soul” (a celebration of New Orleans spirit in the wake of Katrina) and the title track’s Chinatown-meets-the-Dirty-South vibe. But the disc also features the moving Spanish-language ballad “Violeta” (about the mortal thoughts of a soldier in Iraq), the ’80s-inflected rock-ska of “When I Close My Eyes” and much more.

It’s also a tour of L.A.’s diverse and rich international character. “Los Angeles is a microcosm of the world,” Jiro proclaims. “You can drive through this city and hear music and experience cultures from all over the world. That’s who we are.”

Herb Alpert whips up some more "Cream"
Fri Mar 3, 2006 7:02 PM ET
By Jill Kipnis

LOS ANGELES (Billboard) - It takes a lot of nerve to mess with a classic album, and in this case, also a lot of whipped cream.

On March 7, archival label Shout Factory is issuing a sweet new take on the 40-year-old project "Whipped Cream & Other Delights" by Herb Alpert's Tijuana Brass.

Titled "Whipped Cream & Other Delights: Re-Whipped," the album features the original's 12 tracks, though here they are each re-imagined by re-mixers including John King of the Dust Brothers, DJ Foosh, Mocean Worker, Thievery Corporation, Ozomatli, Medeski Martin & Wood and Camara Kambon. Alpert himself also recorded new trumpet solos for each remix.

The LP's iconic cover -- a half-naked woman covered in whipped cream -- is also "re-whipped" with Guess model Bree Condon.

The album is the brainchild of Shout Factory VP of A&R Shawn Amos, who says the idea to remix "Whipped Cream" came to him after the company acquired Alpert's catalog several months ago.

Shout Factory started releasing re-mastered versions of the artist's projects under the "Herb Alpert Signature Series" moniker in February. The initial re-masters included the first two Alpert & the Tijuana Brass albums, 1962's "The Lonely Bull" and 1965's "South of the Border," as well as a new compilation of unreleased tracks from 1963 to 1974 called "Lost Treasures."

"Everyone has a memory of 'Whipped Cream,"' Amos says. "It's the first record of my parents' that I dug as well. I wanted to introduce Herb to a new generation of people, so a remix album was always in my mind from the beginning."

The original "Whipped Cream" was Alpert's first No. 1 album and was in the top 10 of the chart for more than a year.

The album featured "Taste of Honey," which reached No. 7 on The Billboard Hot 100 singles chart, as well as "Whipped Cream," which was used as the theme to "The Newlywed Game."

Working with remix producer Anthony Miranelli, Amos developed a wish list of artists for the project.

Ozomatli member Wil-dog, who re-mixed "Love Potion ..9," says the idea of remaking a track of his former boss' was instantly appealing. Ozomatli's first album was released on Almo Sounds, a label founded by Alpert and his A&M Records co-founder/partner Jerry Moss.

"It seemed like a no-brainer to do it," Wil-dog says. "Growing up, it was an album I remember hearing all the time and I knew every song on there."

After each group re-mixed a song, it was sent directly to Alpert, who then added his horn solos via Pro Tools.

"Some of them worked even better than they did on the original album," Alpert says. "I just feel that there is a good, interesting album here."

The new album cover, designed by the firm Meat and Potatoes, features much less whipped cream than the 1965 original, though the dessert treat is still meticulously placed to hide parts of the scantily clad Condon.

"What was racy in '65 isn't racy now, and we had a lot of discussions figuring out how to do it," Amos says of the cover. "In the end, we went with what we thought the 21st-century version of what this whipped-cream girl would look like."

A delightful 1960s album by Herb Alpert has been updated with new treats
By Gary C.W. Chun
gchun@starbulletin.com

It must be good to be Herb Alpert these days.

His series of pop instrumental records with the Tijuana Brass, indicative of the buoyant mood and spirit of the 1960s when they were first released, was well received a second time around when they were reissued on CD last year. And the trumpeter, along with his business partner, A&M Records co-founder Jerry Moss, will be honored with a lifetime achievement award at induction ceremonies at the Rock 'n' Roll Hall of Fame next Tuesday.

Alpert's most popular '60s album, "Whipped Cream & Other Delights" from 1965, has been remixed, re-imagined and "rewhipped," and is in stores this week. Also taking a cue from the teasing original cover shot, which featured a shaving cream-covered Dolores Erickson, "Rewhipped" features a couple of yummy photos of Guess? model Bree Condon in all her cream-bikinied splendor.

Once you can pry your gaze away from the comely Ms. Condon, the music contained is basically a dreamy, down-tempo selection of confections that uses the spry and bright original songs for inspiration. Speaking of inspiration, Alpert himself laid down some new trumpet solo tracks on most of "Rewhipped."

Half the album's selections feature the work of veteran studio musician and movie score composer Anthony Marinelli, with two of them collaborations with local favorites, the Los Angeles-based Latin-Mexican collective Ozomatli.

The title track is slowed to a hip-hop, head-bobbin' groove, a nice touch being the Mexican-flavored bridge, complete with "tres" and group vocals. Their contemporary take on "Love Potion No. 9" is the most aggressive rhythmically on the album, with band member Asdru Sierra singing the famous Lieber-and-Stoller lyrics.

Marinelli also arranges an appealingly funky feel to "Lollipops and Roses" that is very much in the spirit of the original, and brings out Alpert's best trumpet-playing on an engaging reworking of "Peanuts."

The rest of the crop is up to par, with only German DJ Foosh's remix of "Tangerine" coming off rather slack. "A Taste of Honey" (John King of the Dust Brothers) and "Ladyfingers" (Camara Kambon, another movie music composer) both have a sonically gauzy feel, the original recordings only distant memories. Eric Hilton and Rob Garza of the Thievery Corporation swathe "Lemon Tree" in an Indian fantasia.

My two favorites are Mocean Worker's Brazilian-beat workout on "Bittersweet Samba" and "El Garbanzo," from the always astute jazz-funk trio Medeski Martin & Wood. Those guys always do imaginative breakdowns in their own compositions, and this take with Alpert goes from choppy to smooth and back without a hiccup.

(Alpert and Ozomatli will perform "Love Potion No. 9" on "The Tonight Show Starring Jay Leno" on Thursday.)

March 10, 2006 11:18 AM
by Jim Harrington
liveDaily Contributor
Herb Alpert (music)'s landmark 1965 album, "Whipped Cream and Other Delights," remains a true lounge-music classic. Now, a whole new legion of lizards can enjoy its sizable "Delights" thanks to this fine remix effort.

In truth, this was an iffy project to undertake--it's a tall order to mess with a classic. The album was both a critical and a commercial smash, winning four Grammy Awards and spending eight weeks at No. 1 on the charts. Plus, that original record still holds up 40 years after its release.

But the remix team--which includes the likes of Ozomatli, Medeski Martin and Wood, John King and Thievery Corporation--has done a fine job reinventing the songs without losing the original groove-alicious feel. It also helps that Alpert was highly involved in the project and added tasty new trumpet solos for every track.

Every song works, which isn't something one often says about a remix album. Some of the best remixes come from noted film composer Anthony Marinelli, who combines with Ozomatli to funk up "Love Potion ..9" and to deliver a fantastic take on the title track. Also of note, Medeski Martin and Wood deconstruct "El Garbanzo" and then build it back up to a groove-centric jazz workout that should appeal to their jam-band fans.

Even after all these years, Alpert--who will be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame on March 13--still sounds groovy, man.

Needless to say I looked like Sissy Spacek in the movie Carrie when I left the show that night.
